In Lovecraft's work titled "Nyarlathotep," the Crawling Chaos although depicted as a kind of Pharaoh from Egypt is also represented as an embodiment of chaos and especially death across whole worlds (or even realities). To me, this seems to be an evolution of Poe's "The Masque of the Red Death" in which the Crawling Chaos is the embodiment of a force, in this case a plague, that wipes out civilizations. This parallels to me the Pharaoh of Egypt in the Jewish/Christian traditions. A possible connection to Nyaralthotep then is that he 1. Came from Egypt (where according to such traditions the so called Plagues of Egypt occurred) and 2. Is of the Race of the Pharaohs. Therefore, the Crawling Chaos is the very embodiment of the Plagues of Egypt, gathering followers only to destroy them. This reconnects him to Poe's story as I mentioned before as the Red Death is quite literally the embodiment of plagues. Lovecraft was well known to gain inspiration and even to elaborate on concepts introduced by Poe (such as the Valley of Nis). I believe that Nyarlathotep is such an expansion and that Lovecraft's short story "Memory" reflects the world that the Crawling Chaos visited.

Stephen King further elaborates on Nyarlathotep in his stories especially the Dark Tower series (which I will not provide spoilers for) and his novel "The Stand" which is an even further expansion of Lovecraft's "Nyarlathotep" story in concept.

I bring this up now since we are in a type of quarantine due to a pandemic and so found it relevant. If Nyarlathotep is the embodiment of plague, or at least uses plague to destroy worlds with (perhaps the technology he uses is some kind of alien biological warfare or at least appears to be to us feeble minded creatures) then would plagues such as the Black Death be his doing? Would the current pandemic be his doing? In literary context it is entertaining. I would love to hear anyone's opinion on this or connections to other works they can think of!
