It has come to my attention that a small fracture of disenfranchised ex-students of the Cult of Cthulhu's official Discord server (feel free to join us if you have not already brothers and sisters) have recently been quite vocal in their displeasure of not being seen fit to join The Cult of Cthulhu. So I thought I would address the matter directly. I could go off on many tangents detailing to you why these people were deemed unfit to join our ranks, but alas I believe it would waste both of our time, and not actually address the problem at its source. The Cult of Cthulhu is highly organized. We have advanced members that act as staff (officially, 'Nyth') that operate in teams on every one of our platforms; this Forum that you are on now, The Miskatonic University that you have probably done a course in, even Facebook and Instagram, and it is only thanks to their tireless Work that The Cult continues to prosper. These are the unsung heroes of our movement and I am eternally indebted and grateful for the time they give to The Work. To all Nyth reading this: know that you are appreciated! So when a prospective student joins our Discord Server, it is the Discord-Nyth that keep a keen eye on them. If it is deemed that they are unfit to be a Cultist then the matter is brought to a council (many of which I myself am present for) and evidence is given. Serious debate occurs and all possible angles are addressed. If, after these lengthly discussions, the student is deemed unfit to join then they are asked to leave.
It is perhaps relevant to note that unfit students have only ever been found on our Discord server. This has not once occurred on any of our other platforms - including The Miskatonic University (indeed, those who are turned away often have not even read The Bible of Cthulhu, nor done any courses at the MU). By its nature Discord attracts many demographics and some of them, simply, are not Called. They are here for many different reasons (perhaps a friend in another Discord server said "hey, check this out, it's pretty cool") and sometimes (we're talking less that 2%) they show no genuine interest in our movement at all, but demand to be treated as equals.
Here I must make myself abundantly plain: The Cult of Cthulhu is not a service!
It is not an unalienable right of anybody's to join. We are not a sewing circle, we are not a church and we are under no obligation to let anybody and everybody in. How on earth could we continue to uphold our ideals if we did? This is not about numbers, this is not about reach, or money, or fame - we are not a church!
We are a Cult.
And we are proudly elective. That is likely why you are here. If our ideals resonate with you, if your thirst for knowledge and desire to Ascend is genuine, then you have found your family with us. You have found your home. HOWEVER... if you are here because you need a radical movement to outlet your rage, if you are here because you want to be part of something so badly that you don't care what it is as long as it is large and successful, then you have fundamentally failed to grasp who and what we are. In short you have failed to grasp what it is to be a Cultist. And we have the right to turn you away. Because we are not a service. Because we are not a church. Any Cultist worth their salt knows that the first and perhaps most crucial facet of The Work is: The Call! Have we all forgotten what The Call is? have we all forgotten that not everybody on this planet is Called? Of course we haven't! That is not what is happening. What is happening is exactly what we are seeing happen all across the globe today: the small minority is the loudest and always makes the most noise! It is part of the Sanity & Madness as outlined in The Bible of Cthulhu and was absolutely expected. After all, The Cult of Cthulhu has grown exponentially since our online launch a mere few years ago. And with it we now see the very expected (and very vocal) "haters". Haters made up entirely of people who were not allowed in. Not of rivals. Not of Right Path Religion. Not of naysayers. Of people who wanted to join us but were told that, unfortunately, they simply aren't the right fit. How deliciously vulgar of them. Some of you won't like this. Some of you won't like this at all. That, too, is expected. And, with utter respect and dignity, I invite you to leave us forever if none of this makes sense to you. It is quite simple. We are what we are and you either want in or you don't.
But it behooves me to remind you, brother or sister, wherever you are in this crazy world, that if you believe in the teachings found in The Cult of Cthulhu, if you feel The Call stir in your soul, and if you continue The Great Work in your own dedicated way, then you are one of us. And that will never ever change. We will, all of us, continue The Great Work in the name of The Old Ones.
With much love and respect, That is not dead which can eternal lie, Wyntre
